Bulgarian is a Southern Slavic language, closely related to Macedonian, but baring resemblance to Serbian and Croatian as well. It is spoken by almost 10 million people, most of which live in Bulgaria. Some words have been borrowed from Greek and Turkish due to the lengthy Ottoman occupation. Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Bulgarians are quite proud that a Bulgarian saint invented the Cyrillic script: Saint Cyril. Generally speaking, most words are spelled phonetically, that is the way that they are heard.
