country info

Ukrainian is an Eastern Slavic language written in the 33-letter Cyrillic alphabet, closely related to Russian and Belorussian. Language is quite an issue in Ukraine. Although Ukrainian is the country's official language, for many people Russian is the mother tongue. The discussion can become quite emotional with Ukrainian mother tongue speakers insisting on the use of Ukrainian, as well as Russian mother tongue speakers claiming not to know Ukrainian at all. For your commercial texts, it is recommended to use both Ukrainian and Russian, whereas for all communication towards authorities Ukrainian is recommended. Many Russian mother tongue speakers had to learn Ukrainian after Ukraine proclaimed its independence, but the Ukrainian mother tongue speakers pick them out easily due to their specific accent and use of some Russian words. Eastwards will use only mother tongue speakers for your translations. Eastwards interpreters will immediately depict which language to use with whom, and thus avoid putting you into annoying situations during your business visits.
